5 Great Apps for Summer | SF AppWorks

The sun is shining. Tank tops are multiplying like mosquitos. Summer, that wonderful solstice of warmth and professional ennui is here. Time to leave behind our devices and celebrate this most glorious of seasons!

Ok, you probably won’t leave your devices behind, even with the threat of poolside water damage. Thankfully there are some great apps out there to help you enjoy the next three months as much as possible.

Here is a list of our top five.

1. GrillTime

GrillTime is an app that ensures your Fourth of July BBQ will be the best in the neighborhood. It’s loaded with tips on grilling and can automatically calculate cook times and temperatures based on the size of your food. The multi item timer and flip notifications make sure each item you place on the grill comes out a perfectly cooked savory treat.

2. BeerBuddy

What’s a BBQ without an ice chest packed with beer? BeerBuddy is an app for the beer connoisseur that lets you scan the barcode of any beer and discover tons of cool facts about whatever ale or stout you’re slurping. The app tells you the background information of the beer such as its brewery and user reviews, and it lets you compile a list of your favorite beers so you never forget. For the more health conscious, it’s also a quick way to see the alcohol content and calorie count.

3. MyFitnessPal

Speaking of health nuts, if you’re trying to get into great shape for that upcoming beach trip, MyFitnessPal is for you. This app turns your phone into your personal dietician, providing an extensive food database to help you track calories and suggestions for healthy meal plans. It also tells you how many calories you burn during different exercises so you can keep hitting that calorie deficit to lose unwanted fat.

4. Wolfram Sun Exposure Reference

Once you have that desired beach body, you have to make sure you don’t burn it to a crisp. The Wolfram Sun Exposure Reference app tells you how long you can stay in the sun before you’re likely to burn based on the weather in your location and your skin type. It also gives recommendations on what SPF level your sunscreen should be, as well as where the sun is at all times. So go get that perfect tan and avoid that painful tomato look.

5. LocalScope

For those that want to use their temperate summer days and nights to explore new places, LocalScope is for you. Aggregating information and social data from sites like Yelp and Foursquare, this app paints a comprehensive picture of fun things to do in your surrounding area. There’s also an augmented reality feature that lets you scan what’s around you and discover geo-tagged information. It’s a great way to get a quick snapshot of places to explore.

Now put on some tunes, slip into your swim trunks, and an enjoy the endless summer!
