SEASON 3, EPISODE 9

FROM GOOGLE SEARCH TO SOLVING ENTERPRISE SEARCH, WITH ARVIND JAIN, CO-FOUNDER & CEO, GLEAN

Arvind Jain, Co-Founder and CEO of generative AI workplace search startup, Glean, has an impressive, 25-year career in Silicon Valley. It’s safe to say he’s learned a thing or two along the way. He’s held engineering roles at Microsoft and Akamai, spent more than a decade working on Search at Google as a Distinguished Engineer, and started two companies, Rubrik, in 2014, and Glean, in 2019. Arvind joins us to reflect on key takeaways and pivotal moments across his career as he’s moved between engineering and entrepreneurship – and shares lessons he’s learned about himself as a founder, what it takes to scale a startup, and how to build the right team. He also takes us inside Glean’s AI-powered enterprise search platform, built on technology that combines AI models like GPT-4 with a powerful search engine. Finally, Arvind offers his vision for the future of productivity, where everyone – regardless of their role or title – will use a personalized AI assistant to help them be more efficient and productive at work.

“The most important thing [I look for in a technical agency] is the ability to talk to the person [I want to hire] at the agency and see how well they can understand the requirements of the job or the role that we're trying to fill. And also for them to understand a little bit more about our company, our culture, and who would be successful at Glean versus not.”

LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE TO LEARN:

  • How the current AI revolution is similar to the rise of the modern Internet, but with a more level playing field for startups to compete with large companies
  • The extraordinary learning environment during Google’s early days (think: a “no rules research playground…a place for technologists to build great technology”)
  • How Rubrik's rapid growth – and employees’ subsequent difficulty finding things inside the company – sparked the idea for Glean
  • Techniques Glean uses to avoid issues like data leakage and AI hallucinations, both critical issues to combat inside an enterprise
  • The challenges of rapidly scaling up a growing startup, and the importance of execution and focusing on your own performance over worrying about the competition
  • Advice on when to hire a technical agency vs. hire in-house and what to look for when hiring an agency (hint: specialized skills and culture-fit matters!)
  • Arvind’s prediction for how AI will transform all enterprise apps and advice to early-stage founders building AI-powered startups
